ASA 103 - Basic Coastal Cruising & ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising

This package will be out of our home port of Thornbury.  We will use Thornbury as our base or weather permitting we will sail to local islands.

For 2024, this package will be available out of Killarney ON – one of best fresh water sailing grounds in the world.

Able to skipper a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered keelboat of approximately 30 to 45 feet in length during a multi-day cruise upon inland or coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and sea conditions.  Knowledge of cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather interpretation, safety and seamanship.

Knowledge of provisioning, galley operations, boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, routine maintenance procedures, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation including basic chart plotting and GPS operation, multiple-anchor mooring, docking, health & safety, emergency operations, weather interpretation, and dinghy/tender operation.

ASA 101 - Basic Keelboat Sailing

Ability to demonstrate competencies in all knowledge and skills elements of ASA 101 Standard.

A minimum of 24 on-water sailing hours before undertaking ASA 103

  • Perform duties of skipper and crew on a live-aboard coastal cruise of at least 48 hours
  • Pre-departure check
  • Routine inspection and preparation for a cruise of sailing vessel
  • Knots
  • Under Power - maneuver and control the vessel in confined places
  • Under Sail - sail stead compass course; demonstrate the proper use of all available lines
  • Return to dock

This course is a liveaboard and will be run over 4 consecutive days from June to September.  

Scheduling will be done based on demand and availability.
